The newest film’s publisher and director, Robert Rossen, sets up good multidimensional chess games, getting mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) has worked within gambling enterprise and dated a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic program, this new cast’s suavely controlled body language out-of like and you can danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will stylishly assertive photographs (plus their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of your genre.» [ 10 ]

Cobb, since an authorities inspector, also up the get . While the plot pursue a common pattern, the new characterizations try new and shows adequate to help you overbalance. Dialog are terse and topical, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Unusual cam bases appear once in a while to intensify notice and you will temporarily stop the attention. It is generally an issue of watching Mr. Powell experience their paces smartly if you’re a huge shed away from actors and you may performers bring your customary help. Evelyn Keyes performs the great absolutely nothing woman just who brings forth the new best in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and slinky vixen whom becomes your with the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy once the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does a new in a position concert tour because the an exhausted police inspector exactly who finally shuts the fact. A lot of sipping and you will smoking is performed because of the all of the concerned.» [ 12 ]
